End-of-life care checklist
A gentle way to prepare for a hard conversation.
If you are here, you may be facing one of the hardest parts of loving a pet. This page is not here to push a decision. It is here to help you gather your thoughts before speaking with your vet.
PREPARATION CHECKLIST
What to gather before the appointment
- 1Notice changes in comfort, appetite, mobility, breathing, and good vs. hard days.
- 2Talk with your veterinarian about quality of life, comfort, and what to expect.
- 3Ask what options are available, including in-home and in-clinic care.
- 4Prepare a calm, familiar space with favorite blankets, toys, or food.
- 5Decide who will be present, and how to gently involve children if needed.
- 6Consider aftercare options ahead of time, so you do not have to decide in the moment.
- 7Be gentle with yourself. There is no perfect timeline, only what is kind.
VET CONVERSATION
Questions you can bring with you
- 1What signs would tell us my pet is uncomfortable or declining quickly?
- 2What does the process look like, step by step?
- 3How do you keep my pet calm and free of pain?
- 4Can my family be present?
- 5What aftercare options and costs should we understand ahead of time?
Costs, availability, and details vary by veterinarian and location. Confirm directly with any provider you contact.
ETHICAL BOUNDARY
This page intentionally does not recommend products, providers, or sales offers. For end-of-life decisions, the next step should be a calm conversation with a licensed veterinarian who knows your pet.
Please note: This page is for informational and emotional support only. It is not veterinary or medical advice, and it does not replace a conversation with a licensed veterinarian about decisions for your pet.
